Best software architecture diagram tools in 2027

Most architecture diagrams are out of date a month after they are drawn. The tools below attack that problem from different directions: some generate from text, some model your system as data, some are general canvases. None is best for everyone, so each entry says who it is for and where it falls short.

We make one of these tools, Archreactor, and we have listed it where it earns its place, not first by default. Every competitor fact below was read from the vendor's own page on 4 November 2026; where prices change often or sources disagree we link to the vendor instead of quoting a number.

The tools, compared

1

Eraser

Best for engineering teams writing docs and diagrams together

Engineering teams that want diagrams and docs in one workspace, written as code or drawn.

Strengths

  • Diagram-as-code and a canvas side by side
  • AI diagrams and AI documents on every plan
  • Real-time collaboration and comments, unlimited guests
  • Notion, Confluence and VS Code integrations
  • Many diagram types (sequence, flowchart, ERD, data flow, cloud, C4, BPMN), an MCP server, SOC 2 Type 2 and SAML SSO

Limits

  • Free plan is 3 files and 3 AI credits
  • GitHub integration needs the Business plan or higher
  • Its interactive explainers are not the same as playing one request step by step through a diagram

Pricing. Free; Business $45 per member per month billed annually ($60 monthly); Business Plus $42 per member (10 seat minimum); Enterprise custom. Source: eraser.io/pricing.

2

IcePanel

Best for a shared C4 model of a large system

Software teams who want one shared C4 model of their architecture, kept up to date by hand or API.

Strengths

  • Built around the C4 model, so every diagram is a zoomable view of one model
  • Real-time editing, unlimited read-only viewers
  • REST API and an MCP server
  • Domains and drafts for planning future-state designs (paid plans)

Limits

  • Free plan is 1 editor and 100 model objects
  • Models are maintained deliberately; it is not a prompt-to-diagram generator first
  • Code import is not mentioned on its pricing page

Pricing. Free (1 editor, 100 objects); Growth $40 per editor per month billed annually; Scale $80 per editor per month; Enterprise custom. Source: icepanel.io/pricing.

3

Archreactor

Best for explaining a system: walkthroughs, presales and onboarding

People who need to explain a system: presales, onboarding, design reviews, interview prep.

Strengths

  • Draws from a plain description or a GitHub repo, then plays each request through the diagram step by step
  • Business, Solution and Technical views of one diagram
  • Exports PNG, PowerPoint (Pro) and MP4 (Pro), or share a link
  • Free plan with no card: 25 AI credits a month and 3 GitHub imports a month

Limits

  • Real-time multi-user editing is planned, not shipped
  • No diagram-as-code editor
  • A young product with a small integration list

Pricing. Free; Starter $10/month; Pro $19/month per editor; Team $49/user/month (paid plans are not yet open for purchase).

4

Mermaid Chart

Best if you already write Mermaid

Developers who already write diagrams as Mermaid text and want a hosted editor with AI help.

Strengths

  • Built on Mermaid, the diagram-as-code syntax used in GitHub, GitLab and many docs tools
  • AI diagram generation and a visual editor on top of the text
  • Fits straight into Markdown and docs workflows

Limits

  • Free plan is small (3 diagrams and limited AI, per the Mermaid docs)
  • Output is a diagram, with no step-by-step playback of a request
  • Collaboration is on the paid plans

Pricing. Free and paid tiers; sources disagree on current paid prices, so see mermaidchart.com/plans.

5

Lucidchart

Best general-purpose diagramming for a whole company

Organisations that need one diagramming tool for every kind of diagram, not only software architecture.

Strengths

  • Very broad shape and template library, from flowcharts to network and org charts
  • Mature collaboration and enterprise administration
  • AI-assisted diagram generation from text

Limits

  • General purpose: it does not read your code or know what a service is
  • Free plan is small (reported as 3 editable documents); check lucid.app for current limits
  • No playable request walkthrough

Pricing. Free and paid tiers; see lucid.app/pricing, since plan names and prices change.

6

Miro

Best for workshops and collaborative whiteboarding

Teams that think visually together on a shared whiteboard, with diagrams as one use among many.

Strengths

  • Infinite collaborative whiteboard for workshops and planning
  • AI that can generate diagrams from a prompt
  • Huge ecosystem of integrations and templates

Limits

  • A whiteboard first: diagrams are shapes, not a model of your system
  • Does not read your repo
  • Architecture diagrams stay as accurate as whoever last edited them

Pricing. Free and paid tiers; see miro.com/pricing.

Which should I pick?

If your diagrams live next to code and docs, start with Eraser or Mermaid Chart. If you need one authoritative model of a big system, look at IcePanel. If you need to walk a customer, a new hire or an interviewer through how a system works, try Archreactor. If diagrams are one of many things your whole company draws, Lucidchart or Miro already cover it.

What changed for 2027?

AI generation is now table stakes: nearly every tool above can draft a diagram from a prompt. The differences that matter are what the tool is connected to (your repo, your docs), whether the diagram is a model or a picture, and whether someone can follow how a request moves through it.

Try Archreactor on your own system

Free, no card. Describe a system or import a repo and see the diagram in about a minute.
